Report 1998/99 by the Secretary General

       CONTENT of the published report

The 47th IHGC Congress was held for the 5th time in the history of the IHGC in Spain. The two previous Hop growers’ Congresses in 1959 and in 1967 were held in Madrid as well as in 1978, 1989 and in 1999 in León. Cordial thanks to Spanish Hop growers’ organization, the company SAE Fomento del Lúpulo as well as to all who - during the preparation period - contributed to the Congress organization.

Hop industry data and figures as well as problems of a hop supply between the two congresses were discussed at the meetings of the Joint trade Commission in November 10, 1998 in Nuremberg and in April 16, 1999 in Paris – in chair with Mr. Jean-Paul Feldmann.

The Technical Commission had a meeting during the last congress in the USA and in April 16, 1999 in Paris. On its meeting during the last congress a varied and interesting program with four papers on very diverse subjects was presented with a success. On the second meeting the program for this congress in León with proposed topics was discussed by its chairman Dr. Gregory Lewis. Since Dr. Lewis had changed his working activities he has proposed recently to step down as a chairman of the TC. I think, we could be grateful for his contribution.

After the last meeting of the Scientific Commission in summer 1997 there was a meeting recently in July 1999 in Pulawy, Poland. I owe thanks to Prof. Dr. Vaclav Fric from the Czech republic - as its president. Thanks are addressed also to Dr. Elisabeth Seigner from Germany, who was active as the secretary of this commission.

For detailed reporting on IHGC events and data exchange into the publications I appreciate a lot a contribution of the manager of the “Hop growers of America”, Mr. Sean McGree as well as that of the chief-editor of the German hop magazine “Hopfen-Rundschau”, Mr. Otmar Weingarten.

For a conferment of a Hop order 1999, 25 proposals have been submitted: 24 nominations for the first degree (Knight) and 1 for the second one (Officer). These were confirmed by the IHGC Executive Committee at the meeting on August 4, 1999. I do heartily congratulate all decoration holders.

Finally, I would like to thank Mr. Gregorio Garcia Alonso as the IHGC President and all three Vice presidents, the Chairmen and members of Commissions, as well as, to all who contributed to the effective work of Commissions as well as to all representatives of the member countries for a confidence.

IHGC Secretary General

Dr. Martin Pavlovic
